Misel dneva

Anybody who goes out of their way to let you know that They Believe In Something is probably predisposed to discrediting other belief systems or identities. Christians, Jews, Atheists, Vegans, Americans, Spaniards, Men, Women, Queers -- any member of any of these groups who takes a great deal of pride in being part of the club almost always derives that pride from defining themselves against something else. The most vocal and strident participants are usually the ones trying to tear down everybody else. And the fact that the overly-vocal minority is usually made up of assholes makes the more-tolerant majority, in all of these groups, look bad. So anybody who says "I Am An Atheist!" is probably just as likely to be a douche as somebody who declares "I Am A Christian!" because the subtext for both groups is usually "...and FUCK YOU if you don't like it." I have friends who are Christian, even though I'm technically an atheist -- and we get along just fine, because they don't make a huge deal out of their Christianity, just as I don't make a huge deal out of my atheism. I also get along famously with my gay friends because I don't hang my entire identity on the fact that I'm straight, and vice versa. Seems simple enough.
